Marital Maintenance by Visually Impaired Husbands and Sakinah Family Resilience: A Maqasid al-Shariah Perspective

This study examines the fulfilment of marital maintenance (nafkah) obligations by visually impaired husbands who are alumni of Panti Penganthi, a social rehabilitation centre in Temanggung Regency, Central Java, Indonesia, and its implications for building a harmonious family (keluarga sakinah). Employing a qualitative single-case study design anchored in Islamic sociological jurisprudence, the research conducted in-depth interviews and non-participatory observation with 3–5 key informants (blind husbands as household heads) alongside supporting informants (spouses, Panti management, and local Religious Affairs Office officials). Findings reveal three adaptive strategies: (1) maximising reflexology-based income through service diversification and networking; (2) intra-household role redistribution founded on the principle of mubadalah (mutuality); and (3) spiritual resilience grounded in Islamic values of trust (tawakkal) and gratitude (shukr). Analysis through the Compilation of Islamic Law (KHI) Article 80 and Maqasid al-Shariah—particularly hifz al-nafs (preservation of life) and hifz al-nasl (preservation of lineage)—demonstrates that the families achieve substantive legal objectives of Islamic marriage law beyond material thresholds, constituting an inclusive model of nafkah applicable to persons with disabilities.
